📘 Introduction

Claude can answer questions, write text, analyze files, and help with code. But Claude becomes much more useful when it can connect to the tools and data you already use.

That is where Claude Connectors come in.

In this beginner guide, you will learn what Claude Connectors are, how they work, how they relate to MCP, and when you should use a connector instead of manually copying information into Claude.

💡 The short answer

Claude Connectors let Claude access external apps, services, tools, and data sources.

For example, a connector can let Claude search Google Drive files, read Slack context, work with GitHub issues, or use a custom internal tool.

Claude -> Connector -> External app or data source

Most Claude Connectors are powered by MCP, short for Model Context Protocol. MCP is the open standard that gives AI applications a structured way to interact with tools and data outside the chat.

🔌 What is a Claude Connector?

A Claude Connector is a connection between Claude and an external system.

That system could be a cloud service, a business tool, a code platform, a knowledge base, or a custom MCP server.

Instead of copying information manually, you connect the tool once and then ask Claude to use it during a conversation.

For example:

  • Connect Slack so Claude can help summarize relevant team discussions.
  • Connect Google Drive so Claude can search documents you have access to.
  • Connect GitHub so Claude can reason about issues, pull requests, or repositories.
  • Connect a custom MCP server so Claude can use your own internal workflow.

🤖 How do Claude Connectors work?

At a high level, a connector gives Claude a safe and structured path to an external service.

User request -> Claude decides a connector is useful -> Connector calls the external service -> Claude uses the result

For example, if you ask Claude to summarize recent Slack messages about a project, Claude can use the Slack connector instead of asking you to paste the messages manually.

Claude still follows the permissions of the connected service. If your account cannot access a file, channel, or record in the original app, Claude should not be able to access it through the connector either.

🧩 Are Claude Connectors the same as MCP?
